Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Writer/director James Gunn recently revealed that the High Evolutionary survived the events of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie and is now imprisoned on Knowhere.
While MCU fans were initially led to believe that the High Evolutionary died during the destruction of Edge Labs, Guardians 3 VX artist Miguel Ángel Acevedo Montserrat later revealed that Drax the Destroyer can be seen with the cosmic villain on his shoulder while escaping with the once imprisoned test animals. After asking if it was true on Twitter, Gunn confirmed that Montserrat was telling the truth. He then added that the High Evolutionary was “Imprisoned on Knowhere” by the Guardians.
Chukwudi Iwuji, who previously worked with Gunn on DC’s live-action series Peacemakerportrayed the High Evolutionary in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Although Iwuji’s High Evolutionary shares some similarities with its comic book counterpart, there are some big differences. In a recent interview, Iwuji explained that he based his performance solely on what Gunn wrote for him and didn’t research the character before playing him. “I don’t have these conversations (about respecting comic book continuity),” he said. “I had so much in the scripts and enough there. Rocket’s backstory for the purposes of this movie was all we needed.”
He continued, “Who the High Evolutionary’s mother or home planet was really doesn’t matter here to me. I really do, as an actor in general, not just for that, I’m very suspicious excessive research. Because sometimes you we get so lost in those details and that’s what we then take into the room, and sometimes they block out what’s actually in front of you or what’s on the text.”
GOTG Vol. 3 Crosses $650 Million Worldwide
Although Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had a lower-than-expected opening weekend, the MCU trio showed remarkable legs, dropping just 47% in its second and third weekends at the domestic box office. At the time of writing, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has grossed over $660 million worldwide and is on track to surpass the box office total of the first Guardians movie ($773 million). It remains to be seen whether Volume 3 will have enough gas in the tank to beat the box office of the second film ($869 million). On the rise, Guardians 3 has already exceeded the gross life of another Phase 5 title, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniawhich raked in a disappointing $475 million worldwide.
What’s next for the Guardians?
While Marvel Studios hasn’t announced a fourth Guardians movie at that time, Volume 3 introduced a new lineup for the Cosmic Team consisting of Rocket, Groot, Adam Warlock, Kraglin, Cosmo, and Phyla. Marvel has confirmed, however, that “the legendary Star-Lord” will return in future MCU projects. If Marvel decides to go ahead with a fourth Guardiansit would not be written and directed by Gunn due to his exclusive contract with DC Studios, which began as soon as Volume 3 has been freed.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently playing in theaters.
